Choosing the right shoes is so important and can make a world of difference in how comfortable and healthy our feet feel throughout the day. It’s not just about style or trends; it’s about supporting our feet properly to avoid pain, discomfort, and long-term problems.
I popped in to Bernard's shoe shop in Newport - an independent retailer with excellent footwear knowledge and a really good choice of shoes, boots and slippers. This isn't an ad for Bernard's but I do believe in supporting local businesses where possible. They had a sale on when I took the photos for this blog so prices may not be the same when you visit. You'll receive a friendly welcome and lots of help in choosing the right shoes. (Without the pushy sales feeling you sometimes get elsewhere.)
Why Shoes for Healthy Feet Matter
Our feet support our entire body weight and help us move with ease. But if we wear shoes that don’t fit well or lack proper support, it can lead to issues like blisters, bunions, plantar fasciitis, or even back pain. Always remember, healthy feet start with the right foundation.
Choosing shoes for healthy feet means looking beyond just the outside appearance. It’s about comfort, fit, and function. Shoes that are too tight or too loose can cause friction and pressure points. Shoes without enough cushioning or arch support can strain muscles and joints. It’s important to find shoes that match your foot shape and lifestyle. Bernard's have some really different styles of shoes and brands which are known for being good quality, supportive and stylish. They also stock a variety of Skechers for both men and women which so many of my clients seem to love.

How to Find Shoes That Fit Perfectly
Finding shoes that fit well is the first step to protecting your feet. I have written a previous blog called What is 'good' footwear? which has lots of details about material, design, heel hight etc which would be worth a read if you haven't seen it.
Here are some tips to make sure my shoes feel just right:
Measure your feet: Our feet can change size over time. If you haven't had your feet measured for a long time it might be worth having them measured, especially if you notice discomfort.
Try shoes on later in the day: Feet tend to swell as the day goes on. Trying shoes in the afternoon or evening helps ensure they won’t feel tight when your feet are at their largest.
Check the width and length: Your toes should have enough room to wiggle, probably a finger's width at the top. The shoe should not pinch or squeeze anywhere. Some brands come in standard, wide and extra wide fits. Often people end up sizing up because the shoe feels tight but in reality a wider fit may be what you need not a longer shoe.
Walk around in the shoes: Don’t just stand still. Walk on different surfaces if possible to see how the shoes feel in action, at least walk the length of a shop or a room if you're trying them on at home.
Look for adjustable features: Laces, straps, or buckles can help you get a better fit.
Remember, a good fit is snug but not tight. If you feel any pressure points or discomfort, it’s best to try a different size or style.
Understanding Foot Types and Shoe Needs
Not all feet are the same, and that’s why understanding your foot type can help you choose the best shoes. Here are the common foot types and what to look for:
Flat feet: If your arches are low or collapsed, you might need shoes with strong arch support and stability features.
High arches: People with high arches often benefit from cushioned shoes that absorb shock well.
Neutral feet: If your feet have a normal arch, you can usually wear a wide range of shoes but still need good support.
Wide or narrow feet: Make sure to find shoes that match your foot width to avoid pinching or slipping.
If you’re unsure about your foot type, a professional foot assessment can be very helpful. It’s a simple step that can guide you to the right footwear choices.
Materials and Design That Support Foot Health
The materials and design of shoes also affect foot comfort and health. I always look for shoes made from breathable materials like leather or mesh. These help keep feet dry and reduce the risk of fungal infections.
The sole is another important factor. A sole that is too hard can cause discomfort, while one that is too soft might not provide enough support. Look for soles that offer a good balance of cushioning and firmness.
Heel height matters too. I try to avoid very high heels because they put extra pressure on the balls of the feet and can lead to pain. A low, stable heel is usually best for everyday wear.

Tips for Maintaining Foot Health Through Footwear
Wearing the right shoes is just one part of keeping your feet healthy. Here are some practical tips which you might find useful:
Rotate your shoes: Wearing the same pair every day can cause wear and tear and reduce support. If you can it's good to have a few pairs to switch between.
Replace worn-out shoes: Shoes lose their support over time. If you notice the soles are worn or the shoes feel less comfortable, it’s time for a new pair. I do think this is a weakness with Skechers memory foam insoles. It might be that you can put a new insole in if the shoe is still in good condition. The memory foam definitely loses it's bounce over time.
Use orthotic inserts if needed: Custom or over-the-counter insoles can provide extra support and cushioning.
Keep your feet clean and dry: This helps prevent infections and keeps your skin healthy.
Listen to your feet: If you feel pain or discomfort, don’t ignore it. Sometimes a simple change in footwear can make a big difference.
