Choosing the Right Summer Footwear for Comfort and Style
=========================================================
Choosing the right summer footwear is a delicate dance. You want to follow the latest trends while avoiding a collection of blisters by mid-May! Many of us, myself included, find that our feet swell when the temperature rises. This can make selecting the right summer shoes even trickier. So, what should you look for when choosing summer shoes?
The Joy of Summer Footwear
The sun is out, and it feels like the perfect time to wear lighter shoes and show a little skin. I love flip flops, but they aren't always comfortable. Plus, they may not be the best for your feet. While they are great for poolside lounging—just watch out for their slippery nature—they're probably not ideal for everyday wear unless you invest in a quality pair.
What to Look for When Choosing New Flip Flops
Hands up if you've got a cheap pair of flip flops from a store like Primark tucked away! I know I do; mine have a cute leopard print. I also own a pair from Fat Face that has lasted for years. They were on sale and cost about four or five times more than the cheap ones, so I’m reluctant to part with them!
The issue with traditional flip flops is that they tend to be completely flat. Having some arch support is vital for posture and comfort. It allows you to wear them longer without discomfort. Traditional flip flops can also lead to toe scrunching as you grip with your toes to keep them on. This can result in conditions like hammer toe, where your second toe starts to deform.
Additionally, traditional flip flops contribute significantly to landfill waste. They are not considered sustainable. Thankfully, brands like Waves and Gumbies offer more sustainable options, helping to improve your carbon footprint with every step.

If you decide to stick with flip flops, also known as toe posts (or sliders without the toe post), prioritise the following:
Arch Support: Look for a contoured and cushioned footbed. It should have different support levels for various parts of the foot. The heel should be firmer, the middle softer, and the toe area should provide medium support. The shoe should bend at the ball of the foot but not fold in half.
Materials: Leather or suede, as well as vegan alternatives, tend to breathe well and shape to your foot over time. However, they often need breaking in, which can lead to blisters initially. They will last much longer than rubber or EVA. Rubber or EVA is great for the beach or poolside as they are waterproof, easy to clean, and dry quickly. Synthetic materials can get sweaty but are a cheaper alternative to leather. Look for anti-microbial linings.
Wide Straps: A wide strap provides more support and is less likely to rub where the strap joins the sole on the sides of your feet. The wide strap covers the mid-foot for added stability.
While they can be pricey, I recommend the Fit Flop brand. They include all the best features, last for years (depending on how much you wear them), and are comfortable. They also offer other footwear options for both men and women.
Alternatives to Flip Flops
Flip flops aren't for everyone, and many workplaces don’t allow them. So, what else should you consider?
Securing your heel with a strap allows for a more natural walking motion. You’ll be less likely to scrunch your toes, which can affect your gait. A back strap reduces strain on the tendons in your feet and ankles.
A good footbed is essential for the same reasons mentioned earlier when choosing quality flip flops. Think anatomical footbeds like those found in Birkenstock shoes. The sole of the shoe should match the terrain and provide good support.
Many women find that a slight heel is more comfortable. Totally flat shoes can be as painful as high heels. A heel height between 2 and 4 cm tends to be the sweet spot, whether in a wedge or platform style. This helps relieve pressure on the Achilles tendon and provides cushioning.
Size Up: If you’re between sizes, consider sizing up. Feet are more likely to swell in warmer weather.
Adjustable Straps or Fastenings: These allow for changes in foot size throughout the day. Look for multiple fastening options, good-quality Velcro hidden behind a stylish decorative buckle, or elasticated fastenings that make them easy to put on!
Choose a neutral colour. They go with more outfits, brighten your skin, and often look more expensive than they are. Metallics are a popular choice for women, as they can match more than you might expect.
Feel the seams inside the shoes. Are they going to rub? In a comfortable sandal, the seam should be barely noticeable, or it may have a layer of leather or fabric over it.

Preparing Your Feet for Summer
It's worth remembering that even the nicest sandals or summer shoes can't completely hide neglected feet. A light exfoliation, moisturising, and a quick nail trim will make your feet more presentable. If your feet need more than a quick fix at home, consider booking an appointment. This way, you can ensure your feet are not only summer-ready but also as comfortable and healthy as possible.
Conclusion
Choosing the right summer footwear is essential for comfort and style. By considering arch support, materials, and proper fit, you can enjoy your summer days without the worry of discomfort. Remember, your feet deserve the best care. So, take the time to find the perfect pair that will keep you comfortable, mobile, and confident all summer long!
