Our feet carry us through life, step by step, often without much thought. Yet, when discomfort or pain strikes, it can shake our confidence and limit our mobility. Sometimes seeing a professional for foot care is essential but we can also gently care for our feet at home to keep us moving more comfortably. One of the most common foot conditions I come across is Tinea Pedis, known to most of us as Athletes Foot. For most people it's just unpleasant to look at but it can lead to discomfort, be incredibly itchy and it's always best to treat it.
Recognising Athletes Foot
Have you ever noticed an unpleasant itch between your toes, perhaps some flaky skin, or even a bit of redness? You might have encountered the very common skin condition known as Athlete's Foot, or by its medical name, Tinea Pedis. It is also very common on and around your heels.
Don't worry, despite the name, you absolutely don't have to be an athlete to get it! It's one of the most common fungal skin infections out there, and while it's annoying, it is typically very easy to treat and prevent.

What Exactly Is It?
Tinea Pedis is caused by a group of fungi (specifically dermatophytes) that love to live in warm, moist environments. Think of places like:
Gym or swimming pool changing rooms
Public showers
Pool side
Inside sweaty shoes and socks
The fungus thrives when your feet are confined and damp, leading to the familiar symptoms. The most common form usually shows up as scaling, cracking, and itching, often between the fourth and fifth toes and around your heels. Often fungal nail infections and athletes foot go hand in hand.

How to Beat the Fungus
The good news is that most cases of Athlete's Foot can be tackled with over-the-counter (OTC) treatments:
Antifungal Creams, Sprays, or Powders: Look for products containing ingredients like clotrimazole, miconazole, or terbinafine. Apply them as directed, usually for a few weeks, even if the symptoms clear up quickly! This ensures the fungus is completely gone. I personally think Lamasil Once does a good job and you only need to use it once rather than every day.
Keep it Dry: After showering or swimming, thoroughly dry your feet, especially the skin between your toes. If you find it hard to reach your feet, a quick blast with a hairdryer (on a cool setting) can help or if between your toes tend to feel wet a quick run through with some surgical spirit on a cotton bud will help to keep them dry.
This is a highly treatable condition. Stick with your chosen antifungal product, keep your feet dry, and you'll soon be walking comfortably again!
Prevention is Key
Once you've cleared up the infection, here are a few simple tips to keep Athlete's Foot from coming back:
Wear Flip-Flops: Always wear sandals or flip-flops in public damp areas like gym showers and pools. (Do take extra care not to slip when wearing them if your feet are wet.)
Change Socks Daily: Did you know on average our feet produce half a pint of sweat a day, without us necessarily even realising it! If your feet sweat a lot, consider changing your socks mid-day. Choose socks made of materials that wick away moisture (like synthetic fibres or wool).
Alternate Shoes: Give your shoes at least 24 hours to air out and dry completely before wearing them again. Trainers can hold moisture in them for around 3 days, so if you have sweaty feet, ideally trainers need longer to dry out.
Use Powder: Dust an antifungal or simple talcum powder inside your shoes and socks to help keep the environment dry. You can also spray an Athletes Foot spray inside shoes occasionally.
When to Seek Professional Foot Care
If your symptoms are severe, don't improve after OTC treatment, or if you have a medical condition like diabetes, it's always best to speak to a professional. It may be that your need something of prescription strength or more specific tailored advice.
Happy, healthy feet are just around the corner!
