The festive season is often a marathon for our feet, from power-shopping in boots to dancing in heels, or simply wearing our "best" (but probably somewhat uncomfortable) shoes for a get together so taking time to look after our feet is important.

Between the frantic gift shopping, standing in the kitchen for hours, or dancing the night away at holiday parties, our feet are the unsung heroes of the Christmas season. This year, don’t let "aching arches" be the ghost of Christmas past. Taking just 10-20 minutes for a little festive foot therapy can boost your mood, improve circulation, and keep you "mistletoe ready" from head to toe.

Those of you that know me will know that I like (and make) natural skin care options so here are a few ideas to try. Just taking 15 minutes out will work wonders for your well-being and don't worry if you don't have all the ingredients, find something similar or leave it out.

1. The "Candy Cane" Cooling Soak (DIY Activity)

After a long day of shopping, your feet might feel swollen and hot. This DIY soak uses peppermint to cool inflammation and Epsom salts to relax tired muscles.

  • What you’ll need:

    • A basin of warm water

    • 1/2 cup Epsom salts (releaves tension). You could also use any bath salts you might have or even some pink salt will do.

    • 3-5 drops of Peppermint essential oil (cooling & invigorating)

    • A few slices of fresh orange or a cinnamon stick (for that festive scent!)

  • The Ritual: Soak for 15 minutes while sipping on some hot cocoa. The magnesium in the salts absorbs through the skin to help you de-stress instantly.

2. The "Sugar Plum" Scrub

Winter air and central heating can leave heels feeling like sandpaper. Exfoliation is the secret to soft skin.

  • Easy DIY Recipe: Mix 2 parts granulated sugar with 1 part olive oil or melted coconut oil. Add a drop of vanilla extract for a "Christmas cookie" scent.

  • The Tip: Gently massage the scrub into your heels and the balls of your feet in circular motions before rinsing. Remember to apply some cream afterwards.

3. Festive Foot "Yoga"

If you’ve been wearing heels or heavy winter boots, your toes are likely feeling cramped.

  • The Toe Spread: Sit comfortably and interlace your fingers between your toes (like you’re holding hands with your foot!). This helps stretch the muscles and realign your toes after they’ve been squished in shoes.

  • The Tennis Ball Roll: Place a tennis ball (or a frozen water bottle) under your arch and roll it back and forth to massage the plantar fascia.

4. The "Sock Trick" for Overnight Magic

For deep hydration without the effort, try the overnight "mask."

  1. Apply a thick layer of a rich foot cream (look for ingredients like Shea butter or Urea).

  2. Slip on a pair of clean, 100% cotton socks.

  3. Go to sleep! You’ll wake up with "swan-soft" feet ready for Christmas morning.

5. Fun Holiday Foot Tips

  • Alternate Your Shoes: Try not to wear the same boots two days in a row. Giving shoes 24 hours to "air out" prevents bacteria and keeps the cushioning fresh.

  • The Taping Trick: If you’re wearing high heels, try taping your third and fourth toes (counting from the big toe) together with nude medical tape. This is a famous hack to take pressure off the nerve that causes ball-of-foot pain!

  • Elevate: When you finally sit down to watch The Holiday, prop your feet up on a couple of pillows so they are above your heart. It helps reduce "holiday swelling" instantly.

I'll be posting a 12 days of Christmas foot tip series on my social media over Christmas and New Year, take a look if you get a chance. Looking after your feet doesn't have to be hard work, it can be a good chance for a moment of me time and little bit of relaxation.

I'd like to wish you all a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. I look forward to seeing you all soon.
