You might be thinking why bother with foot health appointments?! For some people they are definitely vital, for example those with diabetes, neuropathy or circulatory problems. Some people may just struggle to reach their feet comfortably and need a little help. It's also a nice opportunity for a bit of a pamper and to be able to identify any potential issues which can often be easily resolved. Keep reading to see what I think are 3 key benefits of having regular foot health appointments.

  1. Early detection and Prevention of Issues

Routine check-ups allow a specialist to spot minor problems like developing corns, calluses, or ingrown toenails before they become painful or lead to infection.

Crucially, foot changes can be early indicators of systemic health conditions such as diabetes or circulatory problems. Early detection means a referral can be made if needed to get the right medical intervention, preventing serious complications like foot ulcers or infections. It also means early treatment can begin.

  1. Pain Relief and Improved Mobility/Comfort

A foot specialist can help diagnose the root cause of chronic foot or ankle pain (e.g., plantar fasciitis, bunions, structural issues) and suggest targeted treatment.

Alleviating foot pain directly enhances your ability to walk, stand, and stay active, which supports overall mobility, balance, and quality of life.

  1. Personalised Advice and Maintenance Care:

You'll receive expert, tailored advice on footwear choices and essential daily self-care practices (like proper nail trimming and skin care).

For ongoing issues, foot health specialists can provide maintenance treatments (like safely managing hard skin) and recommend solutions like custom orthotics to correct alignment, redistribute pressure, and prevent recurrence.

Daily Self-Care Practices for your feet

Making these small habits part of your routine can prevent many common foot problems.

  • Daily Inspection: Check your feet every day. Look for cuts, blisters, redness, swelling, changes in skin colour, or anything unusual. Pay special attention to the areas between your toes.

  • Washing & Drying: Wash your feet daily with lukewarm water and mild soap. Gently pat them completely dry, especially between the toes, as moisture encourages fungal growth (like athlete's foot).

  • Moisturising: Apply a moisturising cream or lotion to the tops and bottoms of your feet to prevent dry, cracked skin. Crucially, avoid putting cream between your toes. If you have hard skin or cracked heels starting to build up use a cream with Urea in it.

  • Nail Care: Trim toenails straight across, following the natural shape of your toe, and avoid cutting the corners deeply to prevent ingrown toenails. File any sharp edges smooth. If your nails are too thick, see a professional.

  • Socks and Rotation: Wear clean, well-fitting socks made of breathable material (like cotton or wool blends) and change them daily. If possible, alternate your shoes so each pair has at least 24 hours to air out and dry completely. Trainers ideally need even longer to dry out.

  • Avoid Walking Barefoot: Especially in public areas, like locker rooms or pools to avoid Athlete's foot and verruca. Avoid walking barefoot to protect against injuries and infections, how many times have you trodden on something painful without shoes on!?
